Practical exercise

As part of the interview process, you must complete the following practical excercise:

The task is to setup a simple listening test. The purpose of the test is to determine the threshold modulation depth for the detection of amplitude modulation, i.e., the modulation depth below which the modulation is no longer perceived by the listener. The carrier should be a 4 kHz tone and the ampltiude modulation should be sinusoidal. The test should produce both an estimate of the threshold as well as a visualization of whatever aspects of the data/results you think are appropriate.

You should setup the test so that it can be run by anyone (e.g., someone on the interview panel) on their own PC. You can assume access to standard harware and software. If the test relies on any specific software packages, please include detailed installation instructions.

You should email your test to n.lesica@ucl.ac.uk at least 24 hours before the start of your interview.

This exercise is deliberately underspecified to allow you to make your own choices regarding design and implementation, some of which we may ask you to explain during the interview.
